An Overview of the project progress
In WP1 the partners are engaged on building the Multidimensional and Multiscale AEP Evaluation Framework of NATAE.
The public deliverable, Multidimensional, Multiscale Evaluation Framework is the result of a collaborative effort involving all project partners, including top research institutions, international organizations, and NGOs with extensive experience in agroecology was submitted on 06/30/2023.

The co-creation work on the methodological framework was introduced to the partners in the kick off meeting of NATAE project on 19th January 2023. The process of co-creation included three workshops of task 1.2 of NATAE held on 26th April, 26th May and 15th June and also the possibility to contribute or modify the Glossary, the Methodological Framework and the Database of indicators on the NATAE CLOUD.
The conceptual framework, together with the Kick-off meeting report (T8.2) whose responsible is CIHEAM IAMM and the LL design and methodology guidelines (D4.1) from WUR, is part of the Milestone 2 -Establishing the general methodological framing (submitted on 30 /06/2023) that is meant to provide a contribution to the strengthening of transdisciplinary research and integrated scientific support for relevant EU policies and priorities (e.g. EU strategy for Africa and Green Deal…).
The evaluation framework includes a database reporting 238 different indicators available to assess the performance of Agroecological practices and to track the contribution of such practices to ecosystem services provision and to SDGs achievement and also their connection to One Health Approach.
The data base, builds on previous experiences from other partners and evaluation methods (AVACLIM, TAPE, and GTAEHandbook) it considers a number of specific domains (agroecosystem health; technical performance; quality of life, economy and wellbeing; resilience,…) works at different scale of intervention (agroecosystem level; value chain and food system; territory and landscape).
Thanks to observations of the Project Officer and of Reviewers the database is presently available in open formats facilitating and expanding possibilities for free use and consultation (csv .and .ods formats).
The Multidimensional, Multiscale Evaluation Framework, is an open document and it is being revised, adapted and re-shaped all through the project length in order to showcase the changes in the perception of agroecology and AE transition occurring in the time span of the project development in the LLs and areas targeted by NATAE activities.
The WP2 and WP3_T3.2 Workshops on September 31st and October 1st-2nd brought together LL Leaders and WP Partners face-to-face for interaction and exchange on various topics. The workshop was structured into sessions, during which we focused on different WP2 and WP3 T3.2 related topics and exchanged ideas as partners and LLs. A discussion was held at the end of each session, allowing us to address questions raised by the LL partners, share their experiences on the topic, and their knowledge and expectations. By bringing together partners and LLs, this workshop facilitated discussion and clarification on our progress to date and the strategies we should pursue in the future.
There are several public deliverables that offers valuable insights and methodologies related to the NATAE project. Find all the details of each deliverable below:
- NATAE Living Lab Guidelines. This document serves as a starting point for organizing NATAE Living Labs (LL) in North Africa, offering an innovative governance structure for agricultural research and systems. These Living Labs aim to identify, test, adapt, and scale-up combinations of agroecological practices (AEP) in real-life, complex contexts.

- Farm household typologies in NATAE Living Labs. This document presents updated or newly constructed farm household typologies in each of the NATAE Living Labs. It is a critical resource for understanding the diverse agricultural practices within our project areas.

- NATAE Milestone 4: on multi-actor governance in Living Labs and the MEDAE network. This report describes the establishment of NATAE Living Labs (LLs) and the MEDAE (MEDiterranean network for AgroEcology). Living Labs are operational in five out of six areas, with good participation in activities, and the sixth LL is progressing well after initial delays. The report includes a territorial diagnosis and details of the LL launch event.

- Methodological guide: diagnosis of a rural territory. Identification of agroecological practices and analysis of their conditions of adoption. This guide aims to provide master’s students with concepts and practical tools for their end-of-studies project (PFE) within the NATAE project. Focused on the diagnosis of rural territories with a view to agroecological transition, it is an invaluable resource for future researchers.

The public deliverable, Analysis of agroecological perspectives in North African intersectoral public policies, a review of trends, strengths and weaknesses provides an in-depth analysis of agroecological perspectives within North African intersectoral public policies, highlighting trends, strengths, and weaknesses. It comprises five national reports structured around the agricultural and rural context, recent constraints, an inventory of agricultural and environmental strategies, and surveys on agroecology’s role in public policies. The transversal synthesis offers a cross-cutting view of these findings, relating them to the international context and other sectors like health.

In light of these findings, we are currently conducting an in-depth study on the impact of existing public policies concerning agroecology transitions in North African countries. This study will explore the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of these policies to assess their effectiveness. Our findings are intended to offer valuable insights that can guide future agricultural practices, innovative solutions and policies in agroecology, and we are eager to share our results with you in the near future.
Additionally, we are conducting an expert assessment survey aimed at identifying key objectives within the field of agroecology. This survey will prioritize areas that require attention, paving the way for cutting-edge solutions to support the transition toward agroecology. We anticipate sharing the results of our findings soon.
In parallel, the development of Livestock and Value Chain modules is in process. It will feed the main DAHBSIM model and be the baseline for T6.3 Policy Simulations identified in T6.2.
The first review of the NATAE project took place on September 2024 at the European Commission’s Research Executive Agency in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting was conducted in the presence of the Project Officer, the EC’s external experts, the project WP leaders, and the coordination team in addition to the project external ethics advisor. The meeting aimed to present and discuss the project state of advancement which concluded with the acceptance of the periodic report and the sharing of recommendations for the coming phases.

NATAE Consortium Meeting and General Assembly in Tunis
Between April 30 and May 4, 2024, the NATAE Consortium Meeting and General Assembly took place in Tunis, Tunisia, gathering partners for a week of great discussions and activities focused on agricultural ecosystems and agroecological transitions. The event kicked-off with presentations on the capitalisation of agroecological practices, updates from the Living and Replicant Labs, and the launch of the MEDAE network. The Communication and dissemination efforts were also reviewed. The first day concluded with a social dinner at Dar Belhadj by offering to the participants an opportunity to connect in a relaxed setting.
On May 1, a field visit to the Siliana Living Lab, organized by the Institut National Agronomique de Tunisie (INAT), provided participants with a firsthand experience of innovative agricultural practices and sustainable solutions in Tunisia. The 2nd day continued with more engaging presentations and workshops, touching on key topics such as agroecology as a sustainable production model and crop production under the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS). Participants also had the chance to visit the historic Dougga ruins, a well-preserved Roman town in North Africa. The meeting concluded on May 3 with a session held at the Permaculture Farm L’Heridium, where further insights into sustainable farming practices were provided by reinforcing the Consortium’s commitment to promote a agroecological transition.
